Cordery’s Jonathan Armstrong will speak at a New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) event on Modern Slavery & Supply Chain compliance on April 12.
The event will be online and hosted by Moses & Singer LLP in New York.
The panel will explore international laws and rules governing slavery and human trafficking. It will also look at increasing public and political pressure including moves in the UK to respond to concerns about the plight of the Uyghur Muslims in China.
Others speaker include Samuel Bon, the Executive Director/CEO of SwissContact who will talk about Swiss law changes despite a narrow defeat for new laws on corporate social responsibility in a close public vote.
The panel also includes Azish Filabi, Executive Director of The American College for Financial Services, who will look at the interests investors have in ensuring compliance.
As the legal environment evolves, lawyers will have to consider not just what the law is, but where it might go:
- Should companies be doing more than just meeting their current, minimum compliance obligations?
- How should lawyers be advising corporate clients of legal developments?
- And are governments doing enough to be sure that the laws are sufficient to protect vulnerable populations?
