What is the Cordery Data Breach Academy?
The Cordery Data Breach Academy is a comprehensive full-day session which helps you prepare for data breach reporting under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the NIS Directive. The next Data Breach Academy will be held in London on 20 September 2023 – or you can book your own in-house Academy too. Experts from Cordery will use their experience of handling more than 100 breaches to simulate an attack. You will work through this detailed scenario in real-time as part of a team managing your response. The scenario will keep evolving and experts will appear throughout the day to give you more detailed information. You will be judged on your response with detailed feedback, help and guidance. There will be plenty of surprises too during the day to keep you on your toes. All aspects of your response will be tested including how you gather information, respond and report. You’ll get valuable tips and feedback too including on PR, legal issues and understanding technical issues. The timings, scenario and responses from regulators are based on real-life events. Testimonials from earlier Data Breach Academies “Outstanding”, COO, Financial Services Business “I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and learnt a great deal. It has certainly given us much to think about as an organisation as well as the means to build a more robust and effective capability in this area.” Senior Vice President, Leading Global Technology Business “The Data Breach Academy provided an excellent day of training for our team. Cordery managed to successfully simulate an actual data breach which required us to quickly consider and act upon what felt like an actual live data breach scenario as events continued to unfold throughout the day. The training proved a very useful, and enjoyable, teambuilding event for some of our people who would be working together in managing a data breach should it ever happen. I would highly recommend the Academy as a useful training exercise for any team involved in managing a data breach.” GDPR Project Lead, Leading US Technology Company “Excellent academy: it really put us through our paces with a scenario that seemed remarkably plausible. I came away feeling much more confident about how I would acquit myself if my organisation experienced a breach. Also a great networking opportunity and Cordery were thoughtful about how they grouped the participants. Highly recommended for CISOs and CIOs – in fact all business leaders would benefit from this.” CISO, Large Healthcare and Retail Company |
Who should attend?
The course will be invaluable to anyone who is likely to be part of a breach response team. That could include:
- In-house lawyers;
- Chief Information Security Officers;
- Chief Executives;
- Chief Financial Officers;
- Public relations professionals;
- HR professionals;
- Senior IT professionals
- General Counsel & Heads of Legal; and
- Chief Compliance Officers.
Numbers will be limited to make sure that everyone has a chance to participate in the group’s decisions and so that individual feedback can be given throughout the day.
Can I bring a team from my organisation so we can work together?
Yes. You will work as a team at the Academy. You can bring a team from your organisation to work together or we can assign you to a team made up of people with different specialisms from different organisations.
What will I get out of it?
Experience teaches us that dealing with a data breach is one of the toughest things you’ll ever have to do. You are up against the clock in a rapidly evolving situation. Since we will look at the breach in real-time you will develop skills in a realistic environment. Our experience tells us that anyone who goes through this type of training reacts better in a real-life crisis.
At the end of the course we will give you a certificate of achievement. It is likely that the skills you have developed will give you a real advantage in dealing with your next breach. Having attended the course could also be regarded as a mitigating factor by a regulator.
Who leads the course?
The course is led by expert lawyers from Cordery. They will use their experience of handling breaches to assess your skills and guide you through the process. They will draw on their experience of handling breaches which have been reported to regulators and their knowledge from responding to some of the most well-known breaches. Members of the team will appear in different roles throughout the day, for example as technical experts giving you real-time reports as the issue develops with a chance to ask questions to determine the severity of the breach.

Where will the Academy be held?
The Academy will be held in Central London close to Fleet Street and St. Paul’s. Refreshments, lunch etc. will be provided. The Academy runs in secure premises so that you can discuss real-life situations without the danger of being overheard, for example if the training was running in a hotel. Representatives of each team will spend time in breakout sessions working as a team and in a studio environment.
We have negotiated a reduced rate with the hotel near the venue for those travelling in for the event.
How long does it last?
The Academy runs from 9am to 5.30pm.
When is the next session?
The next Academy will run on 20 September 2023.
How much does it cost?
Attending the Academy costs £995 [plus VAT] per delegate. There is a 20% discount for subscribers to Cordery GDPR’s Navigator subscription service. Discounts are offered for 3 or more delegates attending the same Academy session from the same organisation.
Can I run the Cordery Data Breach Academy with my own team on my premises?
Yes. Bespoke versions of the Cordery Data Breach Academy are available and we can match scenarios to your organisation. Logistically however it might not be possible to use the live TV news studio, depending on your location. We are happy to look at the options and pricing.
